Gummy gummy gummy! These days gummy supplements are EVERYWHERE but does that mean you should take them? I was very anti-gummy when they first came out. Today, I am for a better gummy. What is a better gummy supplement? And more importantly, what is a better gummy supplement for you and yours?
When it comes to your better nutrition, you need a better plan – you don’t want to guess what your body needs to run better, you should assess better, then learn how to get those nutrients in with better, not perfect, choices more often. So here’s how to assess a better gummy (If you want help assessing your supplements as part of your current nutrition, get the Better Supplement Evaluation):
1. Better Nutrition Better Be Delicious! This includes a gummy supplement because if it doesn’t taste great to the person eating it, they aren’t going to want to, and importantly, remember to take it more often.
2. Better Quality. Not all nutrients in supplements are created equally or absorbed the same by the body. I remember when I learned that some calcium in products is from limestone! Limestone is not better! If you choose non-GMO food then your gummy supplement should us non-GMO ingredients too. If you eat greens for folate then your gummy should provide that too. And if you avoid artificial sweeteners and synthetic colors (yay!) in your food and drinks, then your gummy should too.
3. Better Nutrient Balance. Nutrients work better in balance together in the body and come in better balance in foods too. Supplements can be better tools to help balance out your nutrient intake more often. It is important to assess your current nutrition before taking a supplement because you want to know what nutrients your body needs more of to run better. Your gummy can help you get the nutrients like vitamin D3, and for us aging folks, Coq10, that may be harder for you to get from food. If you don’t eat fish, a gummy can deliciously offer you omega 3s too.
4. Better Quantity. Yes, you can enjoy a little added sugar – like up to 6 teaspoons daily if you are a healthy adult, or about 4 teaspoons for kids – so your gummy can be a better way to spend that added sugar as you can get better-for-you nutrients at the same time. But that means making other choices at that eating occasion.
Skip the added sugar beverage at your snack, choose water and your gummy supplement instead.
Need something sweet with or after your meal? Skip the ketchup or cookie and enjoy your gummy supplement (and giving your body the nutrients it needs to run better).
