What’s spookier than ghosts and goblins? All that sugar filling your Halloween candy jar! Sugar-load doesn’t have to be a given while you’re in costume. We’re not suggesting you give up all treats – that would be a ghoulish! Instead, make better not perfect sugar choices to keep your energy levels stable, hormones balanced and cravings in check.
Binging on those fun-sized candy bars can do more than cause a stomach ache. Overloading on sugar will create a surge of dopamine and serotonin – feel-good neurotransmitters that trigger our reward and pleasure centers. After this initial high, your body may crave more which is why dipping into the candy jar multiple times is such a common problem for us on Halloween. And after that candy high, a candy crash on the couch comes pretty soon after. That’s because our bodies are sending out all of this extra insulin to take care of the sugar, which will eventually drop our blood sugar and leave us feeling sluggish or drained.
So what about a sweet treat that satisfies without the crash and burn? What about one that delivers nutrients AND delicious flavor? This isn’t a trick – this is a real treat, and you can find many on the website under “Snacks & Sweets.” A few of my favorites options for Halloween are below.
